Preschool & Day Care

Preschool

Research shows that providing a high quality education for children before they turn five yields significant long-term benefits.

First Methodist School offers Preschool classes for 2 year-olds and 3 year-olds as well as free VPK classes for 4 year-olds.

All of our preschool classes are taught using developmentally appropriate, hands-on learning.

The students in our preschool programs are taught the emergent literacy and math skills appropriate for each age level. Our program encourages the development and use of oral language skills which are critical for understanding and interacting in the world.  We emphasize the structure and function of print through books that are read during “story time”.  Children are taught to hear and manipulate the sounds in our language and later taught to connect these sounds to letters and start reading words and sentences.  We present opportunities to begin to develop an understanding of size, shape and patterns and the concept of counting and one-to-one correspondence.  These number concepts are then applied to recognizing and understanding the use of numerals.

Day Care

Our Day Care program provides quality childcare before and after school hours. We are aware that school-age children have different needs from preschool children, and we have established separate programs for each. We provide a more relaxed atmosphere in Day Care than in the actual school day and we provide well-equipped activity and play areas where children can “unwind” and have fun. The Day Care program is a semi-structured  program during the regular school year, as your child is in class during a major part of the day and needs some less structured  time. Our Day Care program also offers “Summer Camp” activities during the summer months when school is not in session.
